Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is Caption Health?

Caption Health is a healthcare technology company based in San Mateo, CA. Our mission is to detect disease early — when there is the highest potential for impact — by leveraging artificial intelligence and ultrasound.

Our breakthrough AI platform enables any healthcare professional to perform high-quality ultrasound exams for early disease detection. It was recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s "100 Best Inventions of 2021" and one of Fast Company’s "Next Big Things in Health Tech".

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram, or “echo”, uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce a live picture of the heart’s chambers, valves, walls, and other components. Echos are commonly used to assess the structure and function of the heart and can identify many different heart conditions and types of heart disease.

An echo is different from an electrocardiogram, or EKG, which uses electrodes to measure the electrical activity of the heart and looks for abnormalities in heart rate and rhythm.

Is ultrasound safe?

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive technology that has been used in medicine for decades. Unlike X-rays or other types of imaging systems, it does not use ionizing radiation.

Additionally, both the handheld ultrasound device and AI-guidance software used for this heart health exam have undergone rigorous clinical validation.

What safety measures are in place for COVID-19?

We take COVID-19 safety very seriously, and have the following precautions in place:

  • Our scanning staff is fully vaccinated
  • Scanning staff and patients are required to wear masks in accordance with federal, state and/or local mandates
  • Instrumentation is thoroughly sanitized between uses
  • Patients complete a pre-appointment health questionnaire prior to the exam

What information does the heart health exam provide?

The heart health exam leverages our Caption Guidance and Caption Interpretation ultrasound technologies, as well as readings by independent physicians, to provide key measurements of cardiac structure and function.

This information can be especially valuable for people with hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, obesity, current or former smokers, or those with a personal or family history of heart disease.

Does the heart health exam diagnose disease?

The heart health exam does not diagnose disease.* We recommend discussing your results with a primary care physician or other healthcare provider for further evaluation and possible diagnosis.

*Caption Health does not provide medical services. This exam is for preventative purposes to gain information regarding your heart. Caption Health will not provide a diagnosis, treatment, or plan of care.

Who is eligible for an exam?

In order to provide the best possible care, we unfortunately cannot screen individuals in the following categories:

  • Patients who weigh more than 350 pounds
  • Patients who are wheelchair bound, unable to lay down on their back or side, or unable to change positions easily on their own
  • Patients with acute symptoms of heart failure (shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.)

These more complex care needs are best addressed by a full echocardiogram performed by a specialist.

Who performs the exam?

The in-home cardiac ultrasound portion of the exam is performed by a healthcare worker. A physician then conducts a clinical review of the captured ultrasound images and generates the final exam results.

How much does the exam cost?

The introductory price for this service is $299.

How should I prepare for the exam?

No special preparation is required. You can eat, drink, and take any medications as you normally would on the day of the exam. We recommend wearing a loose-fitting shirt that can be easily removed.

How long does the exam take?

The appointment takes ~45 minutes - 1 hour; ~20-30 minutes of that time involves being scanned.

What can I expect during the exam?

Before the exam, the healthcare worker will explain the process and give you the opportunity to ask questions. You will be asked to undress from the waist up. For people with breasts or those who are uncomfortable being shirtless, you will be given a covering to wear.

The healthcare worker will ask you to lay down on your bed, couch, or other flat surface you are comfortable laying down on. They will place an ultrasound wand, called a transducer, on several areas of your chest. The wand will have a small amount of gel on the end to help produce a clearer image; it will not harm your skin. You will feel slight pressure from the wand and coolness from the gel on your chest, but otherwise should not experience any major discomfort during the exam.

You will be asked to change positions during the exam – laying on your back and on your side – so the healthcare worker can capture images of your heart from different angles. You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds at times.

What happens after the exam?

You will receive your results via email within 1 week.* We recommend sharing your results with a primary care physician or other healthcare provider. Your doctor may order additional tests to better understand the findings of the exam. If you don’t have a doctor, healthgrades.com and zocdoc.com are two resources that can help find one in your area.

*Caption Health does not provide medical services. This exam is for preventative purposes to gain information regarding your heart. Caption Health will not provide a diagnosis, treatment, or plan of care.

Scheduling

Can I schedule multiple scans during the same appointment slot, e.g. for a spouse, a parent, or another family member?

At this time, we are unable to accommodate scanning more than one person during a single appointment slot. However, you can book a second exam for another person in the same location immediately following the first exam if the time slot is available.

Can I schedule an exam for someone else, e.g. for a spouse, a parent, or another family member?

Because the scheduling process involves providing informed consent and agreeing to terms and conditions associated with this service, the person who will be receiving the exam must be involved in the sign-up process to provide their consent and agreement. You are welcome to assist with navigating the online sign-up process as necessary.
